Meeting Andy

Over the weeks after returning from Phoenix, without the puppy I had agreed to, and without seeing the puppy litter, I continued to prepare myself for a female puppy when I could return to Phoenix.  I merely assumed the dream images were showing me something different, in the mysterious and symbolic way dreams can, than I was planning for in the agreement of a female puppy.  This was partially reinforced by a dream that came to me in which I was standing on a river bank with a small group of people.  This smaller puppy appeared that was black and white with soft, thick curly hair and came to me approaching me from my left.  He rolled over on his back for me to rub his belly.  I gently put my foot on his belly, and rubbed his belly while rocking him back and forth, while gently pushing him inch by inch into the water, so that he would get use to being in water.  He began floating on the river water on his back with great delight.

I communicated to Phoenix that Robyn’s daughter Shanna might be the one who would know, which puppy was the one for me; and I also communicated shortly later that I kept receiving dreams with a male puppy in it, even though I knew it had to be female.  Within a few days, I received an email communication from Mary saying that Robyn told her to tell me that I could have any gender that appeared to be the right puppy; and that they would keep attentive to see, which one they felt it might be.

While waiting for the opportunity to return to Phoenix, which appeared eminent due to the request by Mary to conduct an intensive training on Intuition for a small group of folks I had a curious meditation one early evening before dinner.  I kept seeing the lanky puppy that appeared in my dreams in my mind’s eye to my left and in front of me, from the same direction he traveled to me in my dreams.  I felt his energy field, and his loving nature; he felt so familiar, like a long lost friend.

In Phoenix, on my return visit, it took about five days before I made it over the Robyn’s place to meet Anderson.  There were about eight people sitting and standing in the living room talking for about an hour, when Robyn, without warning, brought Anderson in the room from the opposite end, in which I was sitting.  He came into the room and, without looking at others as he passed them, walked directly down the center of the room; then, without looking up at me, turned to me with head down, and stuck his head between my knees and legs, and held his head there for what seemed like five or more minutes.  Then, after lifting his head he gave me such nice, direct eye contact.

What struck me about his entrance more than anything though was his appearance.  I had been expecting a red haired puppy like the color of his father.  But he was curly blond, and tall and lanky, with huge paws, just as in the dreams and meditation.

An other thing that struck me was how he late began bounding around the room jumping over my legs and those of others sitting on the couch and chairs – from a standing position leaping like a deer or kangaroo, springing and jumping into laps, licking faces and twirling making turns with great joy.  Robyn said she had never seen him behave quite like that.  That behavior has become his “mark” or persona.

I first met Andersen in a dream. I had been staying in Phoenix at the house of Mary, a friend, who brought me to Phoenix to present a few workshops on dreams and personal growth. One of the participants was Robyn who identified herself as a breeder and trainer of assistance dogs. She brought Frasier, her prize male stud with her to one of the workshops. During breaks he ran around the room with great energy in a graceful but powerful prance like I had never seen from a dog. He was proud, beautiful, aware and confident.

One morning shortly after meeting him I had an intuition as I awoke that came, as intuitions do, out-of-the-blue. The inner impulse was to ask Robyn how it would be possible to get hold of a puppy of Frasier’s for she had told me he currently had a litter they were training. So, I asked her through a communication from Mary, and shortly later I received a response that Robyn would work it out so I could have one of Frasier’s puppies. I received information as to the fee and conditions, as I intended to use one of his puppies as an assistant therapy dog for traumatized children. I was told it would have to be a female.

That night after these communications, as I was drifting into the dream state, an image of the face of Robyn came into my left-front visual field. From space at a distance diagonally off of her right shoulder came running a tall, lanky Golden Retriever. He was leaping and bounding all the way. He came past her and towards me. His coat was blond and curly and his paws huge. He came with great speed. He was wearing a backpack with rockets mounted along his sides, looking like a super-hero in some movie. Only later did I learn that Robin’s company for breeding and training assistance dogs was called Power Paws.

As he came to me, he leaped placing a paw on each of my shoulders. I felt his paws and his energy through the soft, fleshy part of my shoulders below the collarbones. As he stared at me, he twisted his body somewhat to the right...communicating with his eyes, “See, I’m male.”

Then, he pushed himself off, jumping back to the ground, and ran rather far off to the front and right of me. He turned and looked back at me, and then looked to the right-back space diagonally off of my left shoulder. He gave a thundering bark. He barked at something behind me out of my view. I turned and saw a small suspicious looking man in the space of the room behind me – in the subtle energy space of the room. I knew he should not be there, just as one knows an intruder in one’s house is not meant to be there, so I sent him on his way.

I was amazed this dog that just entered my consciousness in the dream state was warning me, just as he might in the waking world, as if he were the dog of a house warning his master. He seemed proud of his accomplishment or warning, and then moved off into the distance.

Kiss of Ann: Travels with Andy, from The Shamanic Dream by Paul Overman, PhD

One afternoon we drove to Goldsboro, North Carolina where my wife had an interview. I went along and drove for we decided to use the trip to also visit our friend Peggy in Jacksonville. I read in the car as I waited for my wife to finish her interview, with Anderson in his metal cage in the back. I closed my eyes after a while, to meditate, then to rest – I thought. In a light meditative or restful-dream state I saw Anderson lying behind me in his cage.

The blond-female, Golden Retriever again appeared and she was with vigor licking his wet mouth with her tongue. Anderson frequently drank from a water container attached to the side his cage, so his mouth was often exceptionally wet in our warm weather travels. Anderson made a groan. Then, the other puppy disappeared and Anderson arose, sat and looked in the direction the female had been standing and the direction she disappeared.

Note: Picture is Andy at dusk. Dusk and dawn are the two times of day that being in touch with the "order of nature" occur. Ann frequently visited Andy in subtle form in the first couple years after their separation.  The appearances - or inner meetings - occurred in what is called the subtle-physical realm, the space that out-of-body experiences occur. Andy and Ann were very close as younger puppies, before separated.

One morning Anderson promptly awoke, arose, stretched and came over to my bedside. His habit is to awaken us early, like clockwork – usually at sunrise. I realized he probably had to go out to relieve his bladder, but he was not insistent upon me arising with him, but enjoyed me rubbing his chest. I was still resting from a long drive the day before. He lied down alongside the bed, which was unusual for him, and I thought he must also be tired. I thought I would use this time to meditate or possibly even drift into a semi-sleep and dream state.

He also must have also drifted into a dream state, for, with my eyes closed, I saw a very large puppy, almost Anderson’s size appear right in front of his face. It was a female, Golden Retriever puppy – a sister. She was showing him great attention.

Then as I drifted further within I saw him in his dream body, walking around me on his leash going round and round in a circle. This is what he does when trying to find the right spot and moment to relieve himself, so I knew he had to go. I got up and took him for his short walk outside before feeding him breakfast.

Note: Above picture is sister Ann and Andy's father Frasier. Ann frequently visited Andy in subtle form in the first couple years after their separation.  The appearances occur in the subtle--physical realms, the space that out-of-body experiences occur and dreams begin. Experiencing "inner meetings" and seeing such meetings can easily occur in early morning as awakening.

Andy and Ann were reported by the breeder to be very close as puppies, before separated.

Canine Andy Dreaming 1: Excerpt, "The Shamanic Dream" – Paul Overman, PhD

On June 24, 2003, Andy found his voice. My wife and I were staying at a Quality Inn at Fredericksburg, Virginia on our way back from the foothills of the Catskills in New York State. Before we arose from bed, Andy was already up and attempting to get our attention at the side of the bed, panting and happy to be awake and alive – attempting to get our attention to be as alive and awake as he was.

Andy was attracted to the metal door of the hotel room and standing at full attention, since he was hearing other Inn guests walking outside passing our door as they went to have their continental breakfast in the Inn’s lobby. Without a growl or other warning Anderson thundered with a great bark. He pulled it up from deep within his belly and he shook the walls of our room. The sound vibrations struck my chest and reverberated through my lungs causing a great startle. My wife Paula and I quickly called to him and commanded him to be quiet. He looked back towards us as if for assurance and then turned his head to the metal door, keeping his stare and attention to the door, as if seeing through the door the outside sounds. He truly discovered he could speak with affect and authority.

We were concerned he had disturbed the neighbor, those staying in the next rooms. How could they not be disturbed for it sounded like thunder!

My wife left the room. I called Anderson to the bed side and told or asked him to lie down on the floor, as he was getting excited by new voices passing by outside and he was taking threatening breaths preparing to bark again.

I placed my left hand over his right shoulder and tucked it under his neck and over his heart to console him, to reassure him. He liked this contact. He quickly calmed and appeared to be rapidly entering sleep and dreams. As I closed my eyes in relief and began to relax myself, in my mind’s eye I saw him on the floor to my left below me, and out of his body came another subtler body or form of him. It was the form of a young boy though, and there then emerged out of the boys form a young girl. She stayed close to Andy, in front of his head. The boy though quickly moved in front of me and around my right side; then, came up behind me and put his two hands on my back at the shoulders. I could feel the tenderness, and concrete contact – just as if being touched by the hands of a young boy. I had felt this before; it was the paws of Anderson, which I experienced the first time he entered my dreams. The first time, though, was on the front of my shoulders when he had jumped on me and stared at me in the eyes.

This time, as he turned into the form of a boy, it felt the same in many ways; but, this time it felt as if energy was gently pouring out of his hands into the back of my shoulders, a warmth, a flowing of energy through contact, not intentional, just his nature.

I drifted further inside and then I felt a tug at my left hand. It was as if there were a cord attached to my hand and to Anderson. A vision of the green-grass field in front of our room came into my mind’s eye, and Anderson was pulling me by the left hand to the field in his dreams to play and dance in the morning light. I then realized that Anderson, when he joyfully jumped, ran and twirled in grass, was dancing in the rays of the sun.

Since then I have secretly called him – though now not so secret with this story sharing – Dancer in the Light.

This was his desire I realized, to go out and play in the sun, and the grass. As I was thinking that later we would go out and do exactly that, the subtle form of a short, pudgy man came right through the wall of the hotel room. Of course this was a man’s dream body that came through the wall. The man had black hair on a balding head and wore a colorful shirt hanging out over his short pants. He came directly towards Anderson as if to check him out and see what the noise or barking was about. At the moment this man in his dream body entered the room Anderson made a disturbed sounding growl, and lifted his head.

I knew this man was checking our room – in his dream. I knew as I watched this, that I was watching Anderson’s and the man’s mutual dream through my inner, dream eyes.

Later that morning while packing our van, which had a metal cage for Anderson, I noticed a man out of the corner of my eye, to the left of me, approaching and opening his trunk. I took little notice even though he spoke to me, saying good morning. I responded back, and mentioned it was a nice day, sunny, even though it had been raining like a monsoon up north. He did not answer, and as I considered this, I remembered the dream of the short, pudgy man entering the room through the wall. I looked at him with a slight turn of my head, and it was the mutual-dream man – black hair on a balding head, red and dark blue or black checkered shirt hanging out over his shorts, short and pudgy.

    About this Journal

This mini online Journal is based on Paul's dreams, visions and extraordinary experiences with his, now passed-over, Golden Retriever canine companion Andy. Some journal posts are drawn from Paul's book The Shamanic Dream and the chapter Travels with Andy.

Paul shares some select waking life and dreaming-with-Andy experiences. This Journal is in its early stages of being posted. It hopefully will gradually be expanded with new entries from Paul's personal Journal, as time allows and need arises to share such stories.

It is hoped by sharing such stories we gain a greater love and compassion for our fellow animal companions on this earthly journey - seeing and understanding their rich inner and outer lives.
